My Role as Dental Therapist at Upton Dental Surgery and Implant Centre

“I hate the dentist”, I don’t want to be here!”, I don’t know how you do this job?”

These are just of a few phrases which I am greeted with every week, and it has been my pleasure for the last 12 years to turn these phrases into

“Wow! I can’t believe they are my teeth!” “thank you so much I actually really enjoyed that experience”

And that answers the question of how I do this job.

So who am I? Where did I come from?

So my name is Fiona and I am a Dental Therapist. I spent 3.5 years at the University of Portsmouth to gain my degree. Many of you may have met me when attending a dental hygiene or tooth whitening appointment, when you or your child have been referred for a filling or when you have had a dental emergency.

A Dental Therapist I hear you say, what’s that? Do I just lay back and talk about teeth? Well yes and no. During an appointment, we will obviously talk about any dental or oral health issues you may have but we will also get down to some active treatment too.

So anyway back to what I am, I am dually qualified as a dental hygienist which you have probably heard of. This allows me to assess the mouths of my patients looking for signs of disease whether that be periodontal disease (gum disease) or caries (tooth decay) and also includes mouth cancer screening too. We will discuss the treatment required, options available and devise a plan of action to improve and stabilise oral health.

Secondly, I am qualified as a therapist and that’s the bit which is a mystery to many patients. A therapist is trained to examine patients, diagnose and treatment plan within their remit, provide fillings, extract children’s teeth, take impressions and other restorative treatments too. So a therapist’s day can be very varied.

I currently work alongside our lovely Hygienist Dawn and we both work closely with Hennie, Kasia, Victoria and David to collectively provide the best possible care for each patient who sits in our chairs. Teamwork makes the dream work as they say and I can honestly say the team we have at Upton is second to none.

So whether I see you in my capacity of hygienist or therapist, I look forward to giving you the best possible dental experience you can have.

Over the coming few months we will be adding more blogs covering many dental topics. If there are any topics you would like more information on feel free to leave a comment and we will try and cover it for you.

Best Wishes

Fiona
